A little time later I watch another performance, by Mighty Heart Theatre company who for 10 minutes take us on an adventure into a world of depression, anxiety, eating disorder and alcoholism, all played out in puppets about 6 inches tall. Together they form the “Itty Bitty Shitty Committee”, we all have one its suggested, I’m not disagreeing. Fortunately, Recovery or the “ Zen Mother Fucker” is on hand to steer these chaotic characters into some kind of order. The Narrator to the piece makes wise and poignant observations throughout, and the puppets themselves, the way they relate physically to the person, a huge giant to their diminutive frames makes for confusing questions about who is in charge in our everyday life all the more powerful. As is stated in the final line of the play; these little characters “they all want to kill me, all want me dead.” Ignore them at your peril-more food for thought.
In the Foyer cafe area was a video installation by Marc Frazer, called “A Trick of the Mind.”It introduces the viewer to a haunting experience, with uncertain exclamations, insulting misunderstood terminology paired with fractured portraits and strangely discordant yet melodic at the same time soundtrack, the overall effect being powerfully disturbing and though provoking. Other dramatic offerings were held in the theatres performance spaces. The Everyman Youth Theatre presented a story of the effects of jealousy and paranoia from a girlfriend/boyfriend on the innocent other half. In voice, dance and music it created a full on experience the psychological effect of this kind of abusive relationship. more powerful stuff.
The final offering from the Brolly Good Show was unsettling from the start. Waiting outside of the room to see a piece about the DWP medical assessment we were bullied and dismissed by the officious individual on the door. Once inside the darkened room the players presented us with their collection of thoughts and emotions on an experience that is hurting , indeed killing people many vulnerable people, hard hitting stuff.
The only performance I didn’t see took place in a car parked outside the theatre, a ten minute one-on-one performance, anyone brave enough for that send in your comments please, respect.
The way that the event was set up was, I think, a very good way to visit the challenging subject matter of the material. The audience were able to take time out and reflect on and chat about the stuff observed, it was much needed. I would definitely recommend all of the performers to future audiences.
